Book review City of Bones.
Plot and important subplots
The mortal instrument is a series of books written by Cassandra Clare and City of bones is the name of the first book and the one which i've read.Clary Fray is a normal 15 year old teenager, not really the popular type she has one best friend his name is Simon and they've been best friends since she could remember. One day Clary and Simon goes to the Pandemonium Club a weird club that Clary dragged simon into, and there clary started to notice a couple of groups who behaved quite strangely. So she follows them and sees them murdering someone she immediately starts screaming and look around this packed club with a lot of people in it and noticed that they can't see them even Simon couldn't see them. There is where she found out that she could see things, things that other normal human beings couldn't like for example werwolves, vampire and demons. The next day she sees Jace the guy who she saw at the Pandemonium club the guy who murdered the other man and she tries to avoid him and Jace can't quite figure out how she could see them. Later on she founds out that her mother is missing and that she was kidnapped by a couple of demons and that Jace isn't a murderer he's a Demon hunter/shadow hunter, he hunts demons and kills them. She goes to Luke a close family friend and she finds out that he is a werewolve and that her mother is a demon hunter/shadow hunter who has been hiding from another evil demon hunter Valentine and that also implies that she is a demon hunter and explains how she can see all these supernatural things.
Important Characters
Clary FrayClary Fray is the main character. She was raised by her single mother and demon hunter Jocelyn and the close family friend and werewolf Luke. Clary Fray is described in the book as nearly identical to her mother with her being very thin and has bright red hair, green eyes and freckles.
Simon lewis
Simon Lewis has been Clary's friend for almost 10 years. Simon has always had a little crush on Clary although he never told her and his crush has grown bigger every year.
Jonathan Jace Lightwood.
Jonathan Lightwood mostly referred as Jace in the book you actually didn't know his name was Jonathan until a while in the book. Jace has been a shado whunter his entire life and has no parents since he's father was murdered when he was just a baby. Jace is described to have long golden hair, golden eyes and skin.
Jocelyn Fray
Jocelyn is the mother of the main character Clary, Jocelyn is an ex shadowhunter and a painter. Jocelyn ran away due to her being involved with Valentine a very evil ex shadow hunter who summons demons in different ways. Before she ran away she stole something very dear to Valentine which angered him. Jocelyn is Described as a very beautiful girl with red hair and looks a lot like her daughter Clary.
Luke Garroway
Luke used to be a shadow hunter he was in the same group as Jocelyn and Valentine. He is Jocelyn's best friend and was a father figure for Clary her entire life. Luke has had a crush on Jocelyn for a long time but has yet declared it to her because of the way Jocelyn sees him only as a father type for Clary. Luke became a werewolf after Valentine betrayed him but has since then become a pack leader twice.
Valentine Morgenstern
Valentine is an extremely powerful ex Shadowhunter, He has been trying to find Jocelyn ever since she disappeared for the thing she stole from him.
Narrative Technique
I think Cassandra Clare has a very ordinary style of writing she doesn't go through a whole book of a story teller or anything and it isn't very unique its normal book with a few dialogue's and is written in first person.
Settings
This story is set in her hometown New york, this books surroundsings and enviroment is usually described as dark and a bit scary with werewolves and vampires.
Language
Cassandra's language is simple and in my opinion not too long or too short sentences it's somewhere in the middle. She tends to write a lot in details which i think just makes it more fun to read and gives a picture of it.
Message
This is a fantasy book and it isn't really something that you can relate to other than a lot of lies in her life. But i think something really exciting and the message about this book is how fast your life can change how fast you can go from an overly boring average 15 year old teenager to a shadow hunter who hunts demons and tries to find her missing mom in such a short time. My point is that i think the message of this book is that your whole life can change in the matter of a second and that you don't REALLY know anybody, for example who would have thought that the closest thing to a father you ever had would turn out to be a werewolf and that your mother used to be a shadow hunter and used to slay demons
My Opinion
Did i like this book ? absolutely i actually loved this book you never feel bored in any time reading this book it's so full of action and the secrets you always find out about the characters through out the book is the best part.
If i'd have to grade this book i'd give it a 9 out of a 10.
I recommend this to everyone who likes to read books especially the ones who likes fantasy books.
